Good Story 027: Lars and the Real Girl

Julie bought a life-size Johnny Depp doll, and Scott got a little uncomfortable. Luckily, they had a movie called Lars and the Real Girl to talk about.

Dr. Dagmar: Have there been any changes in the family in the last year or so?

Gus: [
while Karin simultaneously nods "Yes"] No, everything is pretty much exactly the same except Karin is pregnant and Lars is nuts.

  1. Just listened to the show and had to pipe in and say this is one of mine and my wife's favorite movies to watch together. The first time I saw it I was also a little taken aback by the 'unreal' niceness of the whole town, but I just looked at it in the same way I do something like Doc Hollywood. I think the town is purposely played as idealized so that the whole focus becomes the main character's internal struggle. Having a villain in Lars would just take too much away from it in the way of tone and message. Besides, sometimes it's just nice to see people portrayed in a way we wish we all could be.

  2. That's an excellent way to put that! The town was idealized. And yes it was nice to see.

  3. You didn't say why it was horrible, so I had to go look up your review on your site... which is a pretty sneaky way to generate traffic if you ask me :)
