Good Story 068: Galaxy Quest

Julie thinks the aliens are *SO* cute, but Scott knows that in a second they're gonna get mean, and they're gonna get ugly somehow, and there's gonna be a million more of them. Galaxy Quest (1999) is the topic of Good Story #68.

  1. If it helps, I knew nothing much about Star Trek (just the jokes you hear everywhere) before watching Galaxy Quest and still found it hilarious. I actually remember seeing it in theater and was also surprised at how good it was. You don't need to know anything about Star Trek to find it funny, just general sci-fi. But it certainly does add a lot if you're familiar with it.

The cast has always been one of my favorites. Every single actor is roll on the floor funny in their roles and they really knock it out of the park. For a story about identity, they sure knew their parts well!

  2. Another one I need to rewatch.

This is a movie that could have gone wrong in so many ways and yet pulled this off making fun of all the tropes and having a lot of fun with it.

One thing you missed, as far as I remember, is the whole red shirt discussion as part of the plot. Or am I misremembering the movie?

I am reminded of this aspect since Redshirts by John Scalzi won the Hugo this year. I really enjoyed it regarding how far he took the whole self-aware redshirt aspect and how he divided up the story. Have either of your read it?

Oh and Scott D, while at the con in Utah did you happen to meet Fr. Erik Richtsteig there? I remember his facebook photos of the event.

  3. JD: Great to know the movie is enjoyable without being a Trek fan!

Jeff: I didn't see Fr. Richtsteig there, but I've been to mass at his church a few times. Do you know him? I didn't know he was an SF fan.

Yes, you have the right movie - they never say "red shirt" but Guy is a pretty nervous redshirt throughout. "Let's get out of here before someone kills Guy!"

  4. And I haven't read Redshirts by Scalzi. I think I ought to, though. I bet the audio version is enjoyable!

  5. Scott D, I first came to know Fr. Richtsteig via his Orthometer blog which started back in 2006. Although he doesn't blog much anymore he is rather active on Facebook. He is certainly a SF and Horror fan and are tastes seem to match.
