Good Story 077: Lord of the Rings (Part 2 of 2)

After a brief orc-filled intermission, Julie, Seth, and Scott continue their discussion of J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. This conversation could not be contained in a single podcast! This is Part 2 of 2. See Episode 76 for Part 1.

  1. Received in an email from Will Duquette ... thought I'd put it here so everyone could enjoy it:A Good Story is Hard To Find is just about the only podcast I ever make an attempt to listen to, and that rarely; and listening to your Lord of the Rings podcast (part I) brings home to me another reason why I seldom do. It's frustrating to sit there, and listen to the discussion, and NOT BE ABLE TO JUMP IN! About once every two minutes, I'd think, "Hey, they didn't notice *this*, or they don't know *that*, or, Gosh, what about *the other*!" It's like somebody put me on mute, and I *hate* that.

A sampling of comments you guys missed out on because you didn't invite me over for cocktails and conversation (sigh):

I first read the trilogy the summer I turned nine. My siblings had been reading it, and I'd read The Hobbit, and so I went for it. It took me quite a while, and I missed lots of important stuff, but I remember a number of warm summer days that I spent hours sitting outside reading.

When you're nine, and you've read the Hobbit, in which the journey to Rivendell takes only a few pages, yes, the first part of The Fellowship of the Ring seems to take FOREVER! Good grief, they are just going to Rivendell; why is it taking so long?

Regarding the songs, you might be interested in this Wikipedia page:

Donald Swann, of the team Flanders and Swann, wrote a bunch of tunes for songs from the Lord of the Rings, with Tolkien's permission; I remember seeing it in stores back in the late 70's/early 80's (words plus sheet music). And an album was recorded that features Tolkien reading some of his poems along with Swann's songs sung by a third party. One of the songs actually used a tune by Tokien. I believe some of the tunes were used in Peter Jackson's movies, though I don't know that for sure.

One of Tolkien's poems (I believe it is "Bombadil Goes Boating") mentions Farmer Maggot.

And on and on and on.

    1. If it is any consolation, I often have the same thoughts both during and while listening to the podcast after it is published. There are things that the conversation flows too quickly to get in and then things that I didn't think of at the time. :-)

We could have gone on for a lot longer but 4 hours was the limit of both our schedules and our voices.

SO GLAD that you made the attempt, however frustrating it was! :-)
