Good Story 047: Bleak House

Fog everywhere. Fog up the river, where it flows among green aits and meadows; fog down the river, where it rolls defiled among the tiers of shipping and the waterside pollutions of a great (and dirty) city. Fog at Julie's house, fog at Scott's place. Fog. The fog doesn't stop Julie and Scott from discussing Bleak House by Charles Dickens. The risk of overwhelming deportment doesn't stop them either. Episode 47.

  1. I loved this audio book, one of my favorite Dickens. The LibriVox version narrated by Mil Nicholson is outstanding, her performance and the sound quality are top notch. I was having a hard time at first with so many different characters to keep track of, then I watched the BBC series on Netflix(now gone) and it helped a lot to put faces to names and differentiate. I thought the series and audio book complemented one another, and it's well worth seeking out. Anna Maxwell Martin as Esther and Charles Dance as Tulkinghorn stand out among an excellent cast. Take a look at Mr. Turveydrop: http://bit.ly/1AK8AId Wow!

Dickens is a favorite of mine and I highly recommend genre fans who like him to read Oliver Twist, then Neal Stephenson's Diamond Age- which is a great homage to it.

So pleased to see that you talked about this in a past show, thanks!

    1. Thanks! This is a book that I thoroughly enjoyed but probably wouldn't have read. Part of why I love doing this podcast!
