You mentioned planning at the end... General Eisenhower said (paraphrase) planning is essential; plans are useless. You must go through the exercise of working through resources, contingies, possible courses of action, etc., but the first shot blows everything, all your careful plans, to bits. However, if you haven't done the real planning work, you can't improvise effectively. Make sense?
